Sturgis 2002
Yep, that looks like us. The typical American parents with a hidden secret. Come the first week of August, we'll go thru this transformation becoming a couple of leatherclad, skin exposing, wind in the face loving, bugs in the teeth munching, flag waving biking couple. It's our time to let loose and have some fun. We become a part of mainstream America. It's no longer a small community that comes together and gets wild in unmentionable ways. Nowadays, it's all kinds of people, from professionals to office workers to just your regular kind of folk. It's a part of America, since it's famous all around. Attracting anywhere from 300,000 to over half a million people each year to a small town in the midwest side of South Dakota, this mecca known as the Sturgis Bike Rally, is now a part of American culture. It's indicative of what mainstream American is all about. We went again this year, our second time. We travelled along with several other people who wanted to go for their first time. Since we were the "veterans", we planned out a lot of the days and activities. Take a look at the pictures and enjoy the things we did and saw while there. It was about 1200miles each way to and from Sturgis, but we totalled over 3250miles round trip. This trip included stops at Little BigHorn where General Custer had his Last Stand. We visited Devil's Tower National Monument- always a great natural wonder to see. Up in the Black Hills we visited Mt.Rushmore, and Crazy Horse Monuments. We also rode on the Needles Highway which had fantastic towers of rocks with single lane tunnels thru them making for a fantastic journey of "threading the needles". We also rode on Iron Mountain Road-a fantastically engineered road with 360degree pigtail turns and tunnels that faced Mt.Rushmore. This year we also visited Badlands National Park- a desert type of environment with scenery almost similar to views of the Grand Canyon. We stopped at Wall Drug, how could we resist after all the subliminal messages placed strategically hundreds of miles thoughout the state on the I-90 corridor. We visited Main Street Sturgis, visiting the vendors, checking out the bikes and people, and enjoying a whole day of just hanging out. On our return trip we also visited Glacier National Park- a very kewl and interesting ride with majestic views of canyons, forests, mountains, and lakes. So all this and much more was part of our trip to Sturgis this year. Now did we really transform into the cartoons as shown above? Well, you'll have to search the webpages and see if you can find us. Or better yet, just head on over to South Dakota on the first week of August each year, and leave your inhibitions at home. You'll find out what it's like to be a part of mainstream America. |
